You can stay beside the lake in a variety of magical places to the south of Lucerne and just ferry around (which is worth doing just for the views on a sunny day). The shoreline near Weggis is full of nice hotels (I visited Campus Hotel Hertenstein, a modern and very expensive option). I’d stay somewhere closer to Hertenstein next time, off the busy main street. Weggis is big on the Mark Twain circuit.

  • **Seehof Hotel Du Lac is right in the center of Weggis. It’s perfectly nice and a reasonably budget option for the region, nearly 200 years old but very carefully cared for. The outdoor space is disappointing, very public and loud.

  • ***Restaurant Zee: this is wonderful. Romantic setting on the water, lovely staff, elegantly-prepared food with a fish focus.
  • ***SeeHotel Gotthard: we really liked this for a less fancy dining option. Good Italian food, nice setting, friendly staff, a cat! Hotel looked okay too.
