You can also stay beside the lake in a variety of magical places to the south of the city and just ferry around (which is worth doing just for the views on a sunny day). Weggis is big on the Mark Twain circuit and has a particularly striking view of the mountains and lake – a nice spot for a romantic getaway.

Hotels

The shoreline near Weggis is full of nice hotels (the most premium being Campus Hotel Hertenstein, a modern and very expensive option at the northern end of town). I’d stay somewhere closer to Hertenstein next time, off the busy main street. In the summer, downtown (near the main ferry stop) has a lot of noise until late, including bands and a bar that keeps the music going until 23:00.

• **Seehof Hotel Du Lac is right in the center of Weggis. It’s perfectly nice and a reasonably budget option for the region, nearly 200 years old but very carefully cared for. The outdoor space is disappointing, very public and loud.
• **Romantik Hotel Beau-Rivage Weggis, between the Seehof properties, has nearly identical rooms to the Hotel Du Lac, but has a better outdoor area (pool, access to the lake, lounge chairs) and a good breakfast.

Food

Note that in the summer (but also other times) restaurants book out quickly. Expecting to get a table as a walk-up is not a good bet.

• *Hotel Central am See has a pretty terrace and an average restaurant. We liked our server, and the setting. Food was okay (burger was the standout). Not a place to avoid, but wouldn’t be a first choice to return to.
• **Restaurant Zee: this is wonderful. Romantic setting on the water, lovely staff, elegantly-prepared food with a fish focus.
• **SeeHotel Gotthard: we really liked this for a less fancy dining option. Good Italian food, nice setting, friendly staff, a cat! Hotel looked okay too.
• To try next time: HYG, and the restaurant at Hotel Rössli.
