An incredible technological marvel, brand new, and changing incredibly fast. It has none of the old-world charm of Hong-Kong, but it’s unique in its open city scape beauty. The city is silent because there are only electric vehicles.
To Note: Google Maps do not work in Shenzen. You need a credit card; you cannot use phone or apple pay.
Hotel: the **Ritz-Carlton. The rooms were excellent, but they overlook the conference center, so it’s not very pretty. The service was impeccable. Lobby a little tired. Definitely would stay here again, but I’d also try the Four Seasons next door.
This was a fairly short work trip, without much site seeing, aside from the **Shenzhen Bay Cultural Center – very cool, huge public spaces, famous “air pods” design. The newest area in the city, with the fanciest stores (new money).
Dining:
- The **Obsidian Bar (inside the Ping An Finance Center, 16 Fuhua 4th Road) is on the list for Asia’s Best Bars 2025. It’s described as “steampunk-style,” with excellent views over the city skyline. Very good drinks, outdoor terrace.
- *Putian was a below average Chinese place, in a mall.
