We wouldn’t make San Sebastian a centerpiece of a trip, but if you’re in the area it’s a nice day or two. Rent bikes, eat a lot, go to the beach on the left side (as you face the water), visit the sculptures at Museo Chillida-Leku.

  • ***Bar Egosari, one of our favorite pintxos bars.
  • ***Restaurante Arzak: remains one of the best meals I’ve ever had. Not super “fancy”, retains a homey feel, but perfectly executed.
  • **Mirador de Ulia: beautiful setting, a Michelin Bib Gormand, food was good, situated on the hill overlooking the ocean. Staff was young and aiming for very formal.
  • *Trikua: not good.

  • **Hotel Villa Soro: this was nice, but I’d select somewhere more central to stay.
  • **Hotel Zenit Convento San Martín: made out of a converted church, rather pretty, rooms are nice. Excellent breakfast with a lot of diversity. A little corporate, but acceptably so. Good location.

  • *La Tabakalera: complete waste of time, interesting in concept (artist residence in a former tobacco factory), but touring is a blah experience.
  • ***Museo Chillida-Leku: sculpture garden and museum. Really very nice, cafe on site was excellent. Sharing food.
