I didn’t see Salzberg under the best of conditions, in a cold spring downpour, around 40 degrees. I can definitely tell that this would be a fine place to visit in the summer or a sunny winter day, but there are few indoor activities. Everything our guidebook recommended involves being outdoors.

  • **Augustiner Brau Mülln: huge beer hall and garden. Looks very fun on a sunny day; indoor section is entertaining and loud.
  • **Dom Cathedral: huge, well-designed, lovely plasterwork on walls and ceiling.
  • *Festung Hohensalzburg: We did tour the fortress on the top of the hill to get our daily dose of culture (a decidedly ho-hum experience), and endured a few hours in the rain to stroll the town and some gardens.
  • **Mirabellgarten: not great in the rain, but still a beautiful, carefully arranged garden with tons of flowers. Good place for a picnic.
  • **Stift Nonnberg: very old church and various other buildings; appears to be an active religious place.
