This is surprisingly wonderful and well worth doing. I’ve been three times and still love it. Take the Golden Pass train from Montreux to the top of the peak (literally – it’s a cog railway that goes straight up 1600 meters). The train runs every hour and culminates at two (not excellent) restaurants (one in the middle of the mountain facing Geneva, the other facing east). There’s a summer-only alpine garden. The train experience is excellent and very scenic.

Definitely do not walk up (it’s a killer) but consider walking down. The entire walk takes 5 hours, or you could do segments of the journey. Also note – not cheap! $70 RT per person. Starting from Caux or Haute-Caux makes for a reasonable hiking day (about 2 hours downhill).

***Le Coucou in Caux is a great option for lunch.
