We had two nights and a day on the Medoc peninsula. ***Chateau Meyre Avensan was a great hotel choice – it’s elegant, old fashioned, pretty quiet, has a nice pool. Central location.

On the food front:

  • **Le Saint Julien: very posh indoor setting, friendly chef, excellent food. Wine recommendations were top notch, as you’d expect for the area.
  • **La Table Du Médoc: quite good for a roadside diner type option. Try the burger.
  • *La Savoie in Margaux manages to be high end and rather down market at the same time. Food is good enough. Service is perfunctory. Managed like a factory.

Our original intent was to ride through vineyards and castles, but that proved a bit difficult. Big area, fast cars, more rain than expected. I think I’d skip this area in the future – it’s a major destination for wine fans, but beyond that it’s not the most scenic, flat, unpredictable weather. If you do want to taste, book weeks in advance.
