Liechtenstein is small, modern in a Germanic way, very corporate. Spending more than 2 hours is difficult. Tagging to Switzerland and Austria as you’ll likely pass through the country while going to one side or the other.

  • **Burg Gutenberg: Gutenberg Castle is one of five castles in Liechtenstein and was constructed around the year 1100. Overlooking the small town of Balzers, it has great views and is a peaceful spot. The castle is not a royal residence and is therefore open to the general public free of charge (just the exterior). To see the interior call ahead for a guided tours. Archeological digs have discovered that the hill the castle is situated on has been inhabited since the Neolithic Period. It’s quite pretty, with nice views.
  • *Kunstmuseum: Liechtenstein’s fine arts museum for modern and contemporary art, located in the capital Vaduz. The building was designed by three Swiss architects; Meinrad Morger, Heinrich Degelo and Christian Kerez. I like the building but the art collection is very odd and minor.
