Flåm

Owing to its amazing scenery, Flåm has been a popular tourist destination since the 19th century. Nestled in the innermost part of the Aurlandsfjord, the tiny village attracts nature lovers with its steep mountainsides, roaring waterfalls and deep valleys.The village is a busy travel junction, serving as one of the endpoints of the famous Flåm Railway (Flåmsbana) and as a major highlight of the popular ‘Norway in a Nutshell’ journey between Oslo and Bergen. I wouldn’t stay here (more of a stop for the ferry than a real place to stay).

Sites in Flam and Surrounds

**Flåmsbana Museum next to the railway station is interesting and worth a quick tour. Good history of the region.

**Otternes Bygdetun: just outside of town is a small open air museum. It’s informal – a place they are collecting old buildings of the region – but interesting to walk through if you’re in the area.

**Stegastein Lookout: a minor detour, very pretty spot, overlooks a major branch in the Fjord. Road is *very* steep.

Just north of Otternes is the longest car tunnel in the world, ***Lærdalstunnelen. 24.5 km long! With lighting shows in the middle!

Granvin

To the South of Fläm, Gravin is a historic town with a collection of older buildings. We had a nice lunch at **Jaunsen Gjestgjevarstad – a historic, family run inn with a guest house dating back 350 years.

Just north, the *Skjervsfossen Watterfall is okay, not the most dramatic, but a pretty waterfall.
