***Cologne (“Koln”) is pretty great and worth at least a day. It was important fairly consistently from Roman times on, and has a wide range of centrally located sites, from an impressive Roman museum to an epic Cathedral that’s constantly being repaired (plus a lot of WW2 history to boot). They have one of the oldest beer cultures around; simply going from Beer Hall to Beer Hall makes for a great day. Cologne. The surrounding towns are all centered around the Rhine and have tons of water-side dining.

We stayed in nearby **Bonn, which is rather charming, with many waterside dining options.
