We went a bit out of our way to stay in this particular place – home to a three star Michelin restaurant – and fortunately the drive there is quite gorgeous. Very hilly, castles and churches everywhere. The town of Castel di Sangro appears to be an outdoor adventure destination, especially fly fishing.

***Casadonna Reale, Contrada Santa Liberata Castel di Sangro 67031 AQ. Three Michelin stars. Reale has six bedrooms attached to the restaurant, which makes for a great getaway. It’s pricy, but not French Laundry pricy, and the meal was excellent. It’s fancy, but not pretentious, focused on the best preparation of the food, not foam and “artistic interpretations.”
