Bilbao is worth a two day stop. I didn’t love it on our first trip (it felt very unsafe and grungy), but the Guggenhein, as intended, has had a major impact and it’s a rather nice place to be now.

The **Guggenheim Museum (architecture in particular) is wonderful. The art tends to be very high end. It’s worth a detour to visit if you’re in Northern Spain.

  • *Miro Hotel is entirely unremarkable.
  • *Hotel Ercilla de Bilbao: it was dirty. Absolutely won’t return.

  • **Victor Montes: historic location, good food, slow, inattentive service, a bit touristy. But again – good food.
  • **Gin Fizz Cocktail Bar: Galen had a fun cocktail class here, well run, entertaining. Focus on classic drinks.
  • **Restaurant Amaren: Steaks were far too expensive, food was fine. Not the best steak around, just overpriced in general.
  • **Txirene: This was great – excellent service, good wine, tasty food.
