A very rural district – it’s lovely and looks a lot like the Dolomites. Very touristy.

The town of ***Appenzell itself is cute, lively, packed with tourists. Cows and goats are herded through the main square each morning. We did a wonderful and grueling bike ride to St. Gallen and around to the mountains to the east that was top of the list for scenic vistas – a loop incorporating Route 42 and sections of Route 4.

  • In Appenzell itself, ***Romantik Hotel Säntis is super Swiss and right on the main square. Pretty loud, food isn’t great, decor is very on point for 1970s Swiss Style (so basically perfect in a Swiss historic way). Scenery looks like the Dolomites. Ask for a room on a higher floor facing the square to witness the early morning cow parade.
  • ***Cafe-Hotel Appenzell has excellent food (in a town with otherwise indifferent food). Book well in advance.

***Wildkirchli hostel Berggasthaus Aescher will be highly recognizable from your Instagram feeds. We loved it – amazing setting, fun getting there, good dinner, entertaining company (lots of energetic seniors). Be sure to hike down (not up) – it’s a steep vertical climb, took about an hour, lovely scenery.

There are hotels all over this region, not just this hostel. Full list here:
