A lovely area.

Just before Åndalsnes you’ll find the **Trollveggen Rest Stop, a nicely designed building with a great view, with information about Trollveggen, its historical importance, and the many lives lost.  

At 1,000 metres, Trollveggen is Europe’s tallest vertical, overhanging rock face. Scandinavian rock climbing started in the Romsdal mountains, which boast some of the world’s most difficult climbs, and it’s still incredibly popular.
Åndalsnes itself is popular by virtue of its location, with the confluence of multiple transportation routes. It’s very small and didn’t leave much of an impression, beyond being in a lovely rural setting.

We stayed at ***Hotel Aak, in a historical room. This was perfect – spare but not too spare, very clean, excellent food (dinner and breakfast). Communal tables, which we enjoyed. 

***Trollstigen (literally meaning The Troll’s Ladder or Troll’s Path), about 45 minutes from Åndalsnes, is fabulous and not to be missed. It’s one of Europe’s most dramatic roads, carved through a steep mountainside via 11 dramatic hairpin bends, crossing the thunderous Stigfossen waterfall along a steep 10% incline. It’s an engineering marvel, and the viewpoint at the top is beautiful in any weather. There’s a cafe (didn’t look very impressive) and gift shop.
